Not a closed shop.

Cannot speak as to your grievances. Generally speaking, however, most collective bargaining agreements (CBA) specify that during probationary period, the employer may terminate a probationary employee for any reason or no reason. Some CBAs do cover part time employees.

IMO, what needs to be kept in mind: A union is only as strong as the membership = get involved and stay involved.
