In reality, we know the two "Independents", well at least one of them for sure, are really Democratic party line votes, so I guess you could say that in practice it is 48-48 at the moment.
I really wish the people elected to the represent us would actually do that instead of what they have become over the last decade or two, nearly always just a rubber stamp for their political party. Unfortunately, both sides do it but it seems the fear of the "other side" winning a seat has programed the voting population into doing exactly what the 2 major political parties want -- focus on the fear rather than focus on holding our elected officials accountable. I will admit, with both parties apparently willing to mistakenly accept more and more of the fringes as the "voice" of their party, I can understand why it is getting harder to try to give the "other side" a chance when politicians need to be replaced.
My second wish is that voters would be more concerned with holding elected officials accountable (which would in turn, hold the political parties accountable) and willing to use the power we actually have, our votes, to push both of the major parties back to the center and focused on who they represent, not the letter next to their name. However, it is like I was saying to someone the other day, the opposition party wanting to get elected has to stop running crappy candidates who allow the wackos in the party to put forward dumb, and at times unconstitutional, ideas that make the one who should be sent packing look like the only somewhat safe choice. I wanted John Cornyn to be replaced, but as soon as the Democrats began collectively talking about packing the court, they left me no choice but to give him my vote. I voted against him last time, but the fact that the far-left is actually in more control of the Dem party than the politicians are willing to say on the record made it impossible for me to try to give the Democrat a chance in the TX Senate race. Just being honest.
I do miss the days when some politicians felt they could be honest with people (maybe that is more a southern thing, I don't know ), respect that the opposition is not evil incarnate simply because they happen not to agree with you on an issue, and like our great Hugh here, knew how to insult the opposition in such a way that everyone, including the insulted and their supporters had no choice but to laugh, if only out of respect for their ability to do that.
I couldn't find a very short clip of just the "Poor George" moment, however I was able to find this one which I think shows one of the reasons I really liked her.
It is sad to think about, but if she were alive and running today, as partisan and easily offended as most people act today, I honestly don't think she would be elected, regardless of what party she was in. I really wonder how many practical, moderate, or slightly right/left of center, politicians today the two major political parties push out of politics today in favor of the more and more far-right/far-left ones to be able to dominate the parties?
