I did some pretty thorough online research after I had a bad experience with Norton AV many years ago and decided to go with ESET NOD32, Home Edition. I've had nothing but good experience with it.
It loads quickly on start-up, doesn't slow down my pc, and updates frequently. Some programs update on a schedule, e.g. at set times once or twice a day or whatever. This one updates whenever they have something to update, which can be several times a day. It's blocked/quarantined quite a number of infected emails and websites and since I've been using it - so far - I've never had any issues or problems.
It's not free, but I think it's pretty competitively priced, and well worth it, to me! I just did a quick search to confirm that it's still highly rated (it is) and came across this 30% discount offer ($27.99 vs the usual $39.99) from PCMag, in case you're interested:
