For more history on American organic farming you might be interested in Melissa Coleman’s book "This Life is In Your Hands." It's the story on growing up on Greenwood Farm in Maine (her parents bought a parcel of land from Helen and Scott Nearing, authors of the homesteading bible "Living the Good Life." ) Melissa's father, Eliot Coleman is, of course, the god of American organic farming. I think he came along at the time of the original hippies and was rebelling against Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz, who invented Big Ag and toxic farming… where it pretty much remains today in large part. |
