Rental car companies are in a panic - when the pandemic hit, their business dropped so they not only furloughed employees but also (perhaps foolishly) sold off their cars. Now that business is coming back, they have no cars to rent - people are posting pictures online of empty car rental lots at major airports, rental rates (when you can find a car) are skyrocketing, and car manufacturers are behind in production because of a shortage of the chips they need to put into the cars they're building.
This will all settle down eventually once the supply chain gets unclogged, but for now, Turo sounds like a good alternative IF you can get someone to guarantee that the car will be there when you need it (because the rental companies won't give you that guarantee right now). Also, I would strongly suggest checking with your insurance company to make sure you're still covered when renting a privately owned car like this - the last thing you need is to get into a fender-bender while on vacation and find out that you're not covered for any of the damages. |
