There's no way I would do that. First, because it's a PITA, as Lee/AR said, but I also believe it's a security risk. I tell people that it's my policy to never have photos of people's NPPI on any of my equipment for liability reasons. They seldom have a problem with it. I had that policy reinforced recently when at an appointment with a signer who said that he'd experienced identity theft shortly after his last refi. All he remembered was sending a copy of his ID to escrow, even though we know that there are scads of people who potentially have access to the kind of info that could be used for ID theft. It might not have even had anything to do with his refi, for all he knows.
However, if the notary takes a photo of a person's DL, then they experience identity theft, who do you think they're going to blame? That's the one action that they see happen in front of them and that's what they're likely to remember.
No thanks. My reputation is on the line, so I'd rather lose the business. Frankly, all this emphasis on proof of identity and the resulting increased exposure to people's NPPI, I feel is making us more, not less, vulnerable.
