Not only that, stamp manufacturers have to be pre-approved by the state. Once approved, they're assigned their own unique manufacturer number which has to appear on every notary stamp they produce. I don't know what the requirements are at their end, but I imagine they're pretty stringent.
Nothing, of course, is foolproof, but I've always thought that these controls made very good sense. What's the point of having requirements for getting a notary commission if anyone can simply go to an office supply store and order a stamp. Having to show a copy of your commission probably helps, but it's probably much easier to get around if any place that makes stamps can make a notary stamp. |
