I am so sorry that happened to you, Ilene. It has always irritated me that there isn't a more secure way to order the stamps. In Wisconsin, it is totally backwards in that you have to already have your seal before you get the commission. I have spoken with a couple different individuals from the state after someone told me that they had a friend of theirs notarize their home refinance and all her friend had to do was go to the office supply store and order the stamp. The friend told them (the husband and wife) that she "didn't have to fill out paperwork or anything." I asked them what her name is because it wasn't legal. They quickly left the bowling alley. Had I been smart, I would have said "Really, what's here name? I would love to refer people to her when I am unable to do a signing". This happened in 2006. Who knows how many people are walking around the La Crosse area with illegal documents.
I just checked the Wisconsin DFI website and sure enough, they are still requiring that the stamp is on the application. LOL |
