It is not correct to say that free has nothing to do with UPL. There are states (not all of them) that only consider it UPL if you're getting paid. In my state, you might be committing UPL even if you're not getting paid, but getting paid is a factor. See https://www.vermontjudiciary.org/sites/default/files/documents/op16-043.pdf
