I recently needed a document of my own notarized and could not get in to my office so I went to the local UPS store to have it notarized. It was an acknowledgement that I had signed in advance but the notary insisted I had to sign "something" in front of him so he had me sign my signature on a blank piece of paper (not sure what that was supposed to be for).
He then charged me a total of $5.00 - $2.00 for "notarization" and $3.00 for "document processing". There was no "processing" of the document - he signed and stamped.
When I questioned the fee being more than the statutory max fee for an acknowledgement, he said that all UPS stores charge this "document processing fee" so it must be legal.....
