A great way to shorten URLs is to just go to http://tinyurl.com/. It's just a matter of pasting the long URL into the field where it asks for it, then click "make..." Instructions are clear and easy. Then you can just copy and paste the "tiny" URL it provides for you. I love this tool!
Also, for anyone wanting to know how to make a link active here, just remember to delete the "s" after http. (I'm guessing the design of this site either pre-dates that feature or is set to block those URLs, but just a guess.)
