Trump was out of control during his impromptu news conferences today - it was like Kelly managed to bottle him up for a week, and Trump just popped the cork.
He thanked - THANKED - Putin for expelling 755 US diplomats, actually saying that Putin "let them go" and helped State cut payroll as if Putin had hired them in the first place. There was no indication in his demeanor that he was being sarcastic or was otherwise joking - no smirk, no smile. I wonder if anyone has told him that those 755 diplomats are still going to be on the US payroll when they get home...
Trump has attacked everyone, even members of his own party, for the slightest perceived insult, but has never criticized Putin. Why? Putin's reaction to the new sanctions was way over the top, and a week or so later all Trump can say is that he did us a favor? Really?
Trump's statement today that maybe his comment about "fire and fury" wasn't strong enough was just another example of his inability to walk back something he probably shouldn't have said. He only has one gear - forward. He will never apologize, never retract, never soften, never back down. If anything, he will make matters worse by amping up his rhetoric. It worked when he was dealing with cowering politicians who were more concerned with votes than they were with their oath to put the country first. Now he's dealing with a nut job who may or may not have less common sense than he has, and how he reacts can potentially end up getting a lot of people killed. |
