WAPO has confirmed through multiple sources the during his meeting with the Russian Ambassador and Foreign Minister last week, President Trump revealed highly classified information to them about a potential ISIS plot - information the Russians weren't supposed to have access to, and even some of our allies didn't know about yet.
The sources indicated that Trump was bragging about the great intel he gets every day and elected to share this classified information with them this as an example. As a result, the source has now been compromised because Trump also shared what city the information came from.
CIA and NSA are said to be scrambling to do damage control.
Since the President has wide latitude to declassify information, it's unlikely that what Trump did was illegal - but at the very least, it was an incredibly stupid thing to do, especially given how he kept hammering Clinton about her email server and the potential for classified information to be stolen. In this case, it wasn't stolen - he just handed it to our enemy. |
