The funny thing about that promise that Mexico would pay for the wall is just how many people heard only what they wanted to and twisted what Trump meant around after he won. Trump and some of his staff haven't helped much by not being able to remind people of exactly what he said when he first mentioned it. To be honest, he and a lot of his staff took the bait just as quickly as many on the left do on many issues.
Trump mentioned the trade deficit as just one area (for example) that would be aggressively worked on to become a more balanced number as one area of where the money would be coming from Mexico that would help "pay" for the wall. He mentioned several others. That is what he meant, he never meant that he expected that Mexico would hand over a check or wire money directly to US Treasury to pay the cost.
I must admit, although the charm has worn thin by now, it has been quite hilarious to see the ultra left work themselves up over their own belief that he ever expected Mexico to present a check. |
