...our kids understand it better than we do.
Laura Ingraham, a Fox News host and well-known conservative talking head, took a shot at one of the Parkland high school survivors, mocking David Pogg for being rejected by several colleges.
Objectively, that was a really stupid and cruel thing for a supposed adult to do, but the blowback was almost immediate. The kids took to social media, and literally within hours four advertisers - Nutrish (Rachel Ray), Wayfair, TripAdvisor, and Hulu - pulled their ads off Ingraham's show. More may follow.
Ingraham issued an apology later today "in the spirit of Easter", but nobody's buying it - she's trying to mitigate something stupid she said to save her job. The kids are still sharing the list of her advertisers and calling for a boycott. Maybe she can get a job with Infowars...
The takeaway - these kids are angry, they're determined, and they know what they're doing. You don't organize almost a million people to march in DC and thousands of others to march in a hundred other cities in less than a month by dumb luck. They understand the social media platform and know how to take advantage of it to get their message out. In a sense, it's similar to what Trump did and continues to try to do - and it works.
Like it or not, these kids and young adults are not going away - they are our future and they know how to communicate their message much better than we do. |
