We went to breakfast at the Shawnee VFW post this morning. Perched on a branch in a grove of (leafless) birch trees near the hall was a bald eagle, its gold beak glinting in the sunlight. Since I've been in CO, I've seen a mountain lion (yikes!), a bear, a mama moose and her baby (mini-moose), tons of elk and deer, shaggy sheep, antelope (all sorts) and a herd of bighorn sheep high above the Arkansas River (wow). But I'm thinking that seeing a bald eagle on New Year's Day tops everything. All the world's upheaval aside, a magnificent solitary bald eagle makes an appearance, a link to our country's past and proof life goes on the way nature meant it to be. Great way to start a new year. |
