Here in Florida, the worst state for bug infestation, there are 2 types of homes - those with termites, and those that will get termite. Ants are everywhere from fire ants to sugar ants.
As soon as I moved into my house, I did a preventative treatment. I do an inspection and re-treatment every 3 years. I use chlordane around the entire perimeter, following the label exactly - trench and treat.
I spray sides of house near ground with Dursban, again following directions. I have no problems.
