Dun and Bradstreet maintains a database of business credit scores and ratings. Reputable businesses have a DUNS number (data universal numbering system), which is free to obtain. Consumers have a credit score known as FICO. Businesses have a D&B credit score known as PAYDEX, using a different scoring formula.
To maintain database quality and integrity, D&B only accepts reports of B2B payment experience, known as a trade reference, from businesses with a DUNS number. No anonymous reports are accepted. Submitted trade references are subject to verification and approval, and incorrect information may be flagged for dispute. Trade references include the transaction date and payment status, such as paid in full or past due, and the dollar amount. PAYDEX scores increase if the business pays quickly, before the due date.
To build your own business credit history and PAYDEX score, when purchasing goods and services, you can choose vendors that report your good payment history to D&B. You can view your own basic business credit report for free online. There is a fee to view a credit report on another business. It includes suits, liens or judgments, to see if they have been sued before over unpaid debt.
