Too many review websites allow false, fake, unverified, anonymous reviews to be posted. An honest business can be unfairly attacked and damaged by unknown reputation assassins and a dishonest business can scheme to add fake positive reviews to deceptively boost its reputation.
The BBB has a verification process called Customer-Verified Reviews. The reviewer must confirm the review by responding to an automated email. The BBB verifies the review before it is published online and forwards it to the business. The business can choose to ignore the review, answer it, or challenge it. If the business challenges the review, BBB will alert the customer and request evidence of the marketplace interaction.
Google reviews also suffer from fake reviews with no verification of an actual paid business transaction.
Online merchants can enable verified Google Customer Reviews in their Merchant Center account. These reviews are more trustworthy than standard Google reviews since they can only be posted by real customers who have made an actual purchase.
If an unmanaged, unverified review database allows garbage input, you get garbage output. GIGO |
