After all the back & forths on pronouns in the CA ACK (strike outs/circling is not addressed in our handbook), I finally sent SOS an email on 12/2nd:
My query: "Short Description: Acknowledgment pronouns Your Question or Comment: Another CA notary and I are having this disagreement. He says not necessary to strike through incorrect pronoun (or circle correct pronoun) as it relates to signer. I say we are required to do so. Our handbook is silent on the matter. What's your interpretation of this?"
Here's their response:
"Dear Yolanda Adams,
Thank you for contacting our office.
California notarial law does not provide any provisions requiring a California notary public to circle or strike through the pronouns on a notarial certificate.
Sincerely, Notary Public & Special Filings Section"
When I first started this in 2006, I was circling. Now, I strike through (IMO, a little neater). Since the options are there and as a precautionary measure, I think I'll continue differentiating. Not doing either may be easier and speedier, but IMO leaves things open to add-ons.
