If you already have a dentist you like, you might want to check with him/her to see what they'll accept. My dentist doesn't accept Delta Dental. Also, I had a terrible experience with another dentist who did accept it. I don't think he's necessarily a bad dentist, but since Delta pays them so little, he cuts corners for patients who use that insurance. Most of the work he did for me had to be redone within 2 -3 years! Never again!
Every dentist handles it differently, so someone else might be fine. For example, some dentists just limit the number of Delta patients they accept rather than having different standards for the work they do. And as I said, my current dentist just doesn't accept them at all. I've also found it really difficult to analyze what's worth it and what isn't, as I don't think any dental insurance covers everything. Cleanings are probably covered, but if you need work, it's hard to know if the potential savings (i.e. the portion they'll pay for) exceeds the premium costs. So far, I've gone with no insurance. My dentist offers a 10% discount for seniors, so that may be a trade off, too.
I'd also be interested in hearing about any individual dental insurance plan (other than Delta) that people have been happy with.
