That's right, John. Bread and milk on the table for the kiddies on the way home from a $50 signing that once paid $125+ (of course, there was always Loan-Closers, Notary ProLink (one of the King's family-owned signing service in Newport Beach that went belly up a couple years before SD came on the scene), and SOX, notorious for $50 gigs.
I do hear about some notaries who sit at title companies or builders' offices all day for $200 a day to sign everyone who walks through the door. That could be a $200 signing or five $40 signings. I know that one title company in my area pays their notary $75 for each signing when the notary hangs out all day, but of course, that eliminates the opportunity for any other signings to 8 to 5. If you factor in no driving and lunch is included, maybe that's not such a bad deal. Still, notaries are losing control of their business autonomy and missing out on better opportunities that might arise while the "in-house" daily notary might be denied the use of his/her mobile phone to be able to accept such opportunities.
My minimum fee for single document is $60 and $75 for a small package close by or on my way to a bigger piece of cheese, everything else is at least $100 to $200, depending on where I'm going it could be more.
