This was recently discussed on the TX notary FB group. Here is what Jake B said - he is super knowledgeable. Apparently Brother has figured out a way to prevent the newer printers from accepting aftermarket cartridges, forcing you to purchase Brother OEM.

I had two 5180DWT (it was replaced by the 6200). Both were great with Amazon aftermarket. I have a 6200DWT now that is a year old, and it doesn't matter where I go....if it is not OEM, it will smear, not fuse to the paper, or will streak. I've gone through Amazon Prime, eBay, and LD Products. The moment I put an OEM in, it goes back to normal with no cleaning.
