Depends on the state.

From what I've read here over the years, I believe a few states do allow notaries to have dual commissions, which allows them to cross state lines to notarize, under the laws of the state where their feet are planted. Naturally, this would make the most sense for places where good size metropolitan areas are near - or cross - state boundaries, or in very small states.

Other states, like mine, prohibit a duly commissioned notary in that state from obtaining a notary commission anywhere else.
