I had a squatters when I had rentals. It's not easy. The person I rented to sublet the condo out, he left quit paying me, the squatters took over, changed the locks, and destroyed the place. I confronted them, and words were exchanged, police were called, and nothing I can do at the time. If they have kids, even worse. as long as their possessions are in place and get their mail there you are basically at their mercy until you do an eviction. I asked the police if I could live in the place too since I owned it and could all be roomies, he didn't advise it. I filed for an eviction "to the occupants of..." and went from there. They moved out before the hearing, but still destroyed the place and cost me a few hundred dollars in the eviction process.
Squatters have huge rights here in Florida, and it's a shame the owners cannot claim their property, remove doors, cut power, none of that. |
