No, I am not paying for that as a premium and I don't see it as a value. Every apartment complex around me in this area is gated. It's not like I chose this one because it's more secure than the others. You asked whether I have a fence - yes, I do. The gate is wide open all day, 7 days a week. When it's closed at night, it doesn't keep out people who want to get in - hence the occasional crimes. I don't understand what point you're trying to make.
Also, I don't know what kind of Mad Max dystopian state you live in, but here we don't have electric fences and guard dogs protecting our property. If someone tries to break into your house, you can shoot them - that's called the "castle doctrine" - but you can't really do anything to someone who just steps on your property.
True story - my brother and his wife adopted a German Shepherd that was originally trained as a guard dog - a big dog, probably close to 100 lbs, but one of the sweetest, goofiest dogs I've ever seen. The dog was in the yard one day when the pool guy came into the yard and the dog did what he was previously trained (not by my brother) to do - protect the property. The pool guy went to the hospital with a bite on his arm; he didn't press charges, but my brother had to deal with the police anyway and was warned that if it happened again, the dog would be taken away and put down.
Of course, if the guy had come into the house uninvited and the dog ripped his throat out, it would have been a different story ending. But here, you can't use guard dogs to protect your lawn. |
