The United States is not a democracy. Nowhere is the US referred to as a democracy except in the "reporting" of some "news" organizations.
From Reference.com: "The United States government is best categorized as a constitutional federal republic."
From World Atlas: "The US is a republic composed of 50 states, a number of territories, and a district, Washington D.C, which is also the country's capital city."
Your attempt to characterize the US as a democracy is inaccurate at best. I'll be charitable and not assume any malicious desire to mislead on your part. Certain manipulative sources try to persuade readers to believe that "democracy" and "republic" are interchangeable terms for obvious reasons of political bias, but they are not.
The US has some characterstics of a democracy, but it is not. And as for Hugh's comment "I thought that line died..."; just because you wish it were so, doesn't make it so. The US has no direct vote at the national level. It is a representative constitutional republic.
The United States is a Republic. It's right there in the national anthem. Only in certain political bubbles populated by people who want to fundamentally change the US is that line "dead". |
