There are two potential therapies for this coronavirus that are being looked at; one is the malaria drug that Dr. Faucci talked about; I can't recall the name of the other one, but two people in Washington State who were given it in what was basically a "Hail Mary" pass (not approved for treatment, but there's a "compassionate use" exemption) responded to it almost immediately. There's some promise there, but the evidence is anecdotal - clinical trials are needed and may already be in progress, but those can only be fast-tracked so far. Time is the enemy here.
The same is true for the vaccine - there is a phase one clinical trial in progress, but that's only 45 people and we're about a month out from going to phase two where several thousand will be involved. Researchers are working really hard to find a solution, and I believe they will - it's just not gonna happen overnight. It's not helpful when we get conflicting statements from the people in charge of handling this. |
