Hugh, I would go further than this:

"any attempt to compare the Republican Party of Theodore Roosevelt and, much later, of Richard Nixon with the monstrosity the party has become since Newt Gingrich is a travesty that only stamps the propounder as either ignorant or mendacious."

Any attempt to compare the party of Lincoln with the Republican Party we have today is equally a travesty. Roosevelt was a progressive - how do you compare what he stood for with what the Republican Party stands for today? Republicans like to point out that the KKK was created by Democrats, ignoring the fact that the Democrats who supported the KKK switched parties and became Republicans after the Civil Rights Act was passed. The KKK is now a Republican thing - David Duke, former Grand Dragon of the KKK, tried to run for office as a Democrat, was rejected, and eventually became a Republican.
