Based on when he was diagnosed, the most likely explanation is that he contracted it at the rally. Because you know, science...
A 74-year old man with possible underlying medical conditions made a choice to ignore the guidelines and attend the rally with no protection at all. Who else is responsible for him making that choice? And who else is responsible for the consequences of that choice? Tell me, and I'll blame them instead.
The facts, as uncomfortable as they may be, are that his own choices led to his death. If you want to absolve him of that, knock yourself out. As I said, I take no satisfaction in his death - every death from this virus is a tragedy. At the same time, I'm not going to pretend that this was some kind of quirk. He was a successful businessman who was looked up to by others as a role model. He should have known better. He knew the science and chose to ignore it. He's no different than the thirty-year-old man whose last words to his nurse were, "I think I made a big mistake - I thought this was all a hoax".
So spare me the fake outrage. Every smoker who ever died of lung cancer knew the risk but continued to smoke. Every obese person who had a heart attack knew the risk but didn't lose weight. Bringing drowned children into this is disingenuous - they DIDN'T know the risk but relied on others who should have and those people failed.
Every choice, every decision you make in life has a consequence. Sometimes it works out; other times, it doesn't. Herman Cain made the choice to ignore science. His death is extremely unfortunate but could have been preventable. |
