Surgery on the eyes is very scary, but they've got this type of surgery down to a science, so try not to stress about it. If they're going to do it in less than a half hour and do a post-op exam the same day, this is a cakewalk. Trust me.
I'm having surgery next week. Five years ago I had major surgery that involved putting titanium plates under my left eye socket to support it. Almost exactly five years later, one of those plates has worn through the skin under my eye, which I'm told is not uncommon because that's the thinnest skin in the body. The surgery next week is to remove, shave down, or replace the offending plate. I had a CT Scan done and they showed me the results, which were fascinating. Imagine a 3D image of the inside of your skull, which can be rotated to various angles. They were able to show me the plate that was causing the problem.
So I will be going in on 2/13 at 6 AM - no warm blankets, no relaxing music, just a "party hat" (hair covering) and a cocktail (anesthesia drip that will probably put me out before I get to the OR). Not sure how long it will take - the original surgery took about 11 hours, but this one is scheduled for 2. I may go home the next day, or I may have to stay overnight.
The reason I'm sharing this is to show you that although the prospect may scare the heck out of you, it's really not all that big a deal compared to others - and I know there are others who can tell a worse story than mine. Not trying to minimize what you're going through, but if they can do it all that quickly, you really don't have a lot to worry about. Relax.
Oh, and you can be sure that I will be having something a lot stronger than a pinot the night before my surgery... |
