"Better off paying out of pocket when this stuff comes up."
That may be true - unless or until one of you is faced with a life-threatening diagnosis or bad accident...
I get that it's tough, but have you looked into options under the ACA? I don't know what health exchanges are like in FL, but there are options here in CA with much lower deductibles, and premiums are based on ability to pay. Personally, I've graduated to Medicare, but I was on the ACA before that. The full premium under that program (without subsidies) was $300/mo less than I was paying before for the exact same coverage with the same provider. Also, I have a friend who is still on the ACA. She isn't able to work full time due to health issues, but I believe her premium is less than $100/mo! (To be clear, that's just for one person and I don't know about her deductible.) If you haven't researched it yet, I highly recommend you do!
In the meantime, pray that you all stay healthy!
