Linda, this was my first job before 35 years of attorneys. There was a typing pool of about 15. Typewriters— at least they were electric. The owner chose 3 of us to “dictate” to. I don’t know how she could talk so fast, it had to be 150 wpm at least, for so many hours before moving on numbers 2 and 3. Yes, we learned our own shorthand, then would give all of our pages of typing to one of the typing pool to retype and finalize. The pool soon learned not to complain about the pages they received, because it was very easy for us to put our fingers on the wrong keys and give them complete garbage. It was one of my worst jobs, but one of my best jobs at the same time. I preferred attorneys to stand behind me and dictate while I typed — drove most secretaries/paralegals crazy. |
