Federal holidays are for Federal Government employees, and the reason State and local government and private sector don’t necessarily get the day off.
There are approximately 2.1 million civilian Federal employees; 1.3 active duty military; and more than 500,000 postal workers.
The estimated taxpayer cost for each Federal holiday is $818 million, not including military or postal employees. Now there are 11 Federal holidays.
