He has absolutely zero to do with this country - he got lost, bumped into an island he thought was India, and - despite several journeys back and forth to Spain - never once set foot on the North American mainland that was only 90 miles or so to the west.
Plus, how do you "discover" a land that is already inhabited? That's like saying, "I just discovered this great new restaurant..." No one ever ate there before you happened to stumble across it? The Norse were colonizing the mainland hundreds of years before Columbus showed up. |
