You absolutely need a VPN for security if you're using open wifi; that should be a given.

It's not a bad idea for an NSA to use it at home also, because of the enhanced privacy when you're uploading and downloading documents. Most licenses allow you to put it on all of your devices, including your phone, and it's really inexpensive.

Just go with a trustworthy one - there are free "VPNs" out there, and they're worth exactly what you pay for them.
