First of all, I would have NEVER showed them my license ... and I can't imagine why any notary would. To hand over my DL to anyone other than a law-enforcement officer or someone I was buying alcohol from or obtaining credit from is beyond my comprehension. That said, they've got a copy and that's that. If you're really worried, I suppose you could ask them to return the copy... but the damage is done. It was done the minute you took your DL out of your wallet, not to mention when they took your DL out of the room. How'd that happen?
As notaries, we are there to ID people - that's our job, that's our commission. It is not their job to ID us (they don't even have a "job" except to sign). If they want to "know" who we are, have them call the title company or their LO or give them your business card ... or look you up on the SOS website if it lists commissioned notaries. You think they'd demand a copy of an escrow officer's DL if they signed in a TC? They'd be thrown out of the office.
You might also call them and ask them to shred the copy, saying something along the line that you guard their personal info like Ft. Knox (which we do, think GLB Act) and you expect the same from them, saying you want to avoid an possible identity theft down the road if by chance they didn't take extra care with that copy .... That's what I'd be afraid of - that after a while they'd just toss the copy in the trash and somehow it showed up somewhere you didn't want it to show up.
Just goes to show no matter how many signings we do, there's always something new and unexpected!
