Agree to a DEGREE...

First of all, I can absolutely appreciate the position my fellow notaries are taking on this issue. However, there are, and have been, a few times where people, not aware of how the process works, are concerned of the authenticity of the offers being proposed and therefore need to verify everything. Not sure of other area's in the Country, but in the NYC Metro area our mentality is "If it sounds too good to be true, then it most likely is." I'm guilty of it myself. I don't necessarily take things at face value. I will be on my guard until I feel confident that I have made every effort to reduce those reservations.

Lets think about this. These people don't know us from ADAM! They've been doing most of this through someone on the internet, and through phone calls, not with anyone in person. They have no office to physically go into (not that that matters; if a thief is going to con you, the fact is that they can and will find ways.)

It's better to be safe than sorry. Then if they DO get, or have gotten conned, at least they'll know they did what they could to cover themselves. IMO people SHOULD verify someones ID before allowing them into their home. Honestly, I think it's quite bizarre that people are not more cautious

I'm having a hard time understanding why it would be such a big deal to show your ID. After all, we have nothing to hide.

I ABSOLUTELY do NOT condone someone having a copy of my ID. As was mentioned, I don't think I would ever hand my ID to someone, and if so, they would only be able to peruse the authenticity and I would retrieve it right back. I can tell you right now, I would not have left that property without that copy. I would have called the police if I had to. They have no right to do that. Its WAY out of line.

Also, NJ just started including a perforated wallet sized copy of our notarized commission along with the original sized (it looks exactly like the regular sized one; raised seal and all), so I wear it in a lanyard ID holder around my neck for when I go on my closings. I've always felt uncomfortable going into people's homes without an ID badge. In fact, before we got the miniature sized commission certificate, I wore the Lanyard with one of my biz cards in it. The wallet sized commission certificate is pretty cool.

Not sure if it has any affect, but I feel more comfortable (and professional) with it on.
