It seems to me all-purpose vs. separate certs depending on whether signer is signing for himself or in a capacity is only important for California. California is the only state I know of that doesn't let notaries mention any particular capacity in the certificate, so CA needs an all-purpose cert. The CA cert essentially says the signer might or might not be signing in a capacity and the person reading the certificate should look at the document to figure out if the signer is signing in a capacity or not.
