Steve: there is a fee to renew -- including for the "automatic" renewal and Cheryl: Google is great! From the DMV website:
Fees: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1dmy&urile=wcm:path:/dmv_content_en/dmv/dl/fees/driverlicense_fees#classc
Renewal by mail app: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/wcm/connect/817d879a-e709-45a1-9503-57622ec808b4/dl410.pdf?MOD=AJPERES
Renewal by internet: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/online/dlrbi/dl_top2 (using internet is same process as renewing by mail except for everything is done electronically when renewing by internet, including payment)
I'd had 2 "auto" renewals immediately prior to moving in 2011. When I moved, I notified DMV (online) of my new address. My license came up for renewal in 2015 and I had to visit my local DMV office to pay fee, take a new photo, vision test and thumbprint. No written or driving test required. When I inquired at the time, I was told only 2 consecutive auto renewals were allowed. Guess some slip under the cracks or some renewal applications aren't filled out with full disclosure.
