Collecting on Fees Not Paid

I would like to know from your experiences, what has worked in your favor as far as getting a non responsive SS company to pay you after repeated attempts to follow up? Are there any "unspoken" rules as to how far you should go to collect? Or who you should and/or should never contact to request payment?
