Suggest that you "look B4 U Book" here on Signing Central to check out a companies reputation, reviews, etc., prior to accepting any work.
If you have a smart phone you can easily access this website if you're on the road. Since most of the time I work in my car, I frequently pull over and do this; I used to keep a hard copy of SC companies but found I can search my phone quicker.
I'd also forward your unpaid invoice to a collection agency and try to recoup some of the money you earned and they owe.
