I agree about the handful with whom you have a good relationship of mutual trust. Interaction is a quick phone call with the basics & you both know what to expect. They're the best!
As for those other guys who call and say "...can you help us out today...?" First of all, that statement is inherently asking for a favor. No offense to them, but I know of several very good non-profits who are making a significant positive difference in the community for whom I'm happy to do favors. What have these guys done to deserve the favor(s) they're requesting? When it comes to notary work, I run a for-profit enterprise, a BUSINESS, and their activities only involve benefit to the owners of another supposedly for-profit business.
What do you all suppose the plumber/handyman/electrician/housekeeper, etc. would say to us if we asked them to help us out by traveling to our home and providing their usual services and expertise for half their normal rate? They'd probably politely tell us that it wouldn't be possible, then break out laughing after they disconnect - very much like some of us do...
