From an AP article:
'NASA and NOAA - the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration — announced today that 2016 was the hottest year in history, the third consecutive year that global temperatures set a new record. Stretches of the Arctic Ocean, they said, were an astonishing 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit above normal.'
Weather is local; climate is global.
Climate change deniers often conflate the two. The fact that it is cold where you are right now is irrelevant - when it's winter here, it's summer on the other side of the globe, and it's hotter there than it has been in the past. And when the seasons flip, we have hotter weather here and more violent storms. THAT is global warming or climate change, whatever you choose to call it.
The rising temps in the Artic are melting the ice and causing the sea levels to rise. Several communities on the east coast of Florida are already experiencing flooding at high tide that they haven't experienced before. And yet there are Republicans who insist that this is either a hoax or bad science, and nothing we should be concerned with. What will it take to make this an issue in the Trump administration? Mar-a-Lago being flooded or under water? |
