If you show up wearing shorts, your case won't go before the judge. I see the notice posted on the wall when I go for jury duty. Those TV show "courts" are really just arbitration so I don't know what their rules are, though one guy - the defendent - showed up wearing shorts on Judge Judy. She certainly voiced her displeasure about it to the guy.
