Not true. They were not unauthorized, no matter what Trump's hack lawyer says.
1. The discussions were not classified - Comey went into great detail in explaining how he crafted his memos so they would NOT be judged as classified.
2. The communications were not privileged. Trump never asserted executive privilege, and in fact talked about the discussion in tweets and in a nationally televised interview. Once he opened his pie hole, a behavior he can't seem to control, all claims of privilege go out the window. The WH cannot have it both ways - if it's a privileged communication, NEITHER PARTY can discuss it.
3. Comey was a private citizen when he gave a copy of his memo to a friend and asked that the friend contact a reporter. Since neither Comey nor his friend were government employees or contractors at the time and the conversation was not privileged, nothing illegal happened.
It should also be noted that Kasowitz, who made these allegations, is a real estate lawyer who has worked for Trump for years - he has little or no expertise in this area, and his MO is to attack and threaten a lawsuit. Most of the time, he loses. There is reporting that Trump settled on Kasowitz because at least 4 major "white shoe" law firms refused to represent Trump, citing two concerns: 1) that Trump wouldn't listen to their advice, and 2) Trump wouldn't pay them.
