Despite Trump's constant repetition of the LIES that the children being torn from their parents at the border are the result of a Democrat-written law or that the Democrats are the only ones that can change this, here are the facts you need to keep in mind as he ramps up his LIES about the situation:
1. There is NO LAW that requires that children of immigrants detained at the border be taken from their parents. The only law similar to that is a Bush-era law that mandates that UNACCOMPANIED MINORS arriving at the border should be detained and turned over to the Office of Refugee Resettlement.
2. The "zero-tolerance" policy that created this mess was issued by AG Sessions and is the sole responsibility of the Trump Administration. The memo announcing this policy can be found at

Please note the third paragraph which clearly states: "This zero-tolerance policy
shall supersede any existing policies." Those existing policies - which Trump falsely blames on the Democrats - contained allowances for those who were not considered dangerous and for families with children. So everything from that point forward, good or bad, is all on Trump.
3. The Trump administration is violating both US and International law by treating those legally seeking asylum as criminals and using that as a pretext to take their children away. Most of the 2,000 children taken to date are children of asylum-seekers, not illegal aliens.
4. Trump admitted on Friday that he is using this as a "negotiation tool" - he wants to get funding for his wall along with other immigration policies he wants and is using the children as pawns.
5. Sessions and Sarah Huckleberry Sanders attempted to use the Bible as justification for this new program - Specifically, Romans:13. Without getting into a discussion of the biblical aspects, I would like to point out two things:
a) the most often cited scriptural reference in support of slavery prior to the Civil War was... Romans:13.
b) there is NOTHING in our Constitution that says our laws are subject to or should be justified by Christian scripture.
What I've posted above are facts, not opinion. Even the most vocal Trump supporters can stop, look at them, and understand what this man is doing. Keep all of this in mind as the families continue to be ripped apart, and Trump and his minions continue to LIE and attempt to gaslight you into believing it's not his doing. TRUMP OWNS THIS - it's all his doing in an attempt to force a political solution he wants that includes additional funding for his wall. |
