"Ron DeSantis says "we need to stop monkeying around."
No, that's not what he said. What he said, while referring to his black opponent, was that "we don't need to monkey this up."
It was a poor choice of words at best. Many people on both sides of the aisle agree that he misspoke. I have heard the phrases:
"screw this up" "foul this up" "blow tihis up" "mess this up" "f**k this up"
and other similar phrases, but "monkey this up"? Never heard it, and can't imagine how you would do that. Rather than simply apologizing for saying something that many found to be racially insensitive, DeSantis' campaign doubled down and insisted it didn't mean what it sounded like. Hello? He just (possibly inadvertently) referred to his black opponent as a monkey. If you didn't mean to say that, own it and apologize. What is it, in the age of Trump, that has some politicians refusing to admit they made a mistake? Are they emboldened by the fact that they see Trump refusing to apologize for ANYTHING he says, no matter how awful it is?
