If you're looking for a compromise place, you might want to consider a short cruise somewhere out of Long Beach. One option is the Mexican Riviera cruise, which goes to Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and possibly Cabo San Lucas (at least that's where they used to go), which are all lovely along the coast. I don't know where in CA you're from, but here in So Cal, April can be a bit on the brisk side. Mexican beaches may be more likely to offer some warmth. (It's probably also a much less expensive cruise, if available.) If you want to scale down from that even more, there's a 3-day cruise that goes from Long Beach to Catalina Island and to Ensenada, Mexico.
If you don't care about a cruise and you're looking for lots of things to do, then San Diego ("America's best kept secret") may be another great choice. (I love San Diego!) However, it may be hard to beat Santa Barbara and lunch on Cheryl... Depends on how you like to spend your time and how much time you plan to spend...
