Begin Notary Public 101

In most states, becoming a notary public involves meeting a number of requirements. Generally, you must be 18 years of age, not have a serious criminal history, and successfully complete an application process. In some states, the notary application process will require notary education (ranging from a simple online course to a notary class and competency exam) and a background check, as well as the purchase of a surety bond. A more thorough explanation for your state is described below.

Become a Colorado notary public with Notary Rotary

Qualifications:

Be a resident of Colorado
Be at least 18 years old
Be able to read and write the English language
Be familiar with the Colorado notary law
Not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving dishonesty, as defined in C.R.S. 12-55-102(1.4), during the last five years
Not have had a felony conviction in your lifetime
Never have had a notary commission revoked
Before becoming a notary or renewing your commission, you must carefully read the Notaries Public Act (Title 12, Article 55, Colorado Revised Statutes, Parts I and II. You should also visit the Colorado Secretary of State website
Notary program rules require training and testing for new notary applicants and renewing notaries that have allowed their commission to lapse by more than 30 days. These applicants must submit proof of attendance at Approved Training and proof of passing the State of Colorado Online Notary Testing with the Application for Notary Public Commission and copy of acceptable ID.

Colorado notaries public are appointed for a commission term of four (4) years.

Step 1: Attend state approved notary training.

Step 2: Complete state online notary testing

The State of Colorado online notary exam tests your familiarity with Colorado Notary Law. It also tests your knowledge of the procedures and guidelines addressed in the required training program. The "open book" test should take approximately 30 minutes to complete. You can use either a PC or a Mac. We recommend that you have the most recent version of your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc.) installed.

To schedule and take the exam online, go to cosos.learnercommunity.com.

Once you have finished the test, close the testing window. You will now be able to click on the "Print" button on the right-hand side of your screen under the heading "Achievements." Once you have your certificate from the exam site, proceed to Step 3.

Step 3: Complete the online application process or print the application and submit according to the instructions

Access the Colorado Notary application and fill out according to instructions.

If you are unable to, or prefer not to, use the online application form you can print the notary public application and other forms from the Notary Public Forms page.

Once you have completed the application according to instructions prepare it and copies of the following items to be mailed to the office of the Secretary of State with the appropriate filing fees.

Both sides of acceptable identification
Notary training certificate
Notary exam certificate

Step 4: Order your official seal and other notarial products from Notary Rotary, Inc.

Fill out the required information and place an order for your Colorado notary seal and any other supplies you may need. The state of Colorado requires notaries to keep a journal. A journal serves as a permanent record of notarizations you perform.

Every Colorado notary public must keep a journal of every notarial act, with only one exception.

If the original, copy or electronic record of the document

Includes all of the information that would be entered in your journal, and

Is kept by your firm or employer,

you do not have to enter it into your journal.

Recording every notarization in your journal is strongly recommended as the best practice. The Modern Journal of Notarial Events, offered by Notary Rotary, was specifically designed for notaries and includes many features not available in other journals.

Once you receive your Colorado notary seal and supplies you will be ready to begin your duties as a notary public for the State of Colorado.
